Get Fit & Win

Get Fit & Win is a FREE program designed to encourage Androscoggin County residents to start or continue exercising-any way you like! Successful participants are eligible for cash drawings of $100, $250, and $500 and other great prizes from local businesses!

We will provide you with:

  • A FREE Recreational Opportunities Guide, which contains hundreds of ways and local places where you can get active
  • A log for recording your exercise (also available by download from our website)
  • Periodic mailings/e-mailings with handy physical activity tips
  • A list of community events to help you get active

To Participate

  1. Register on-line. You can also call Healthy Androscoggin at 795-5990 to register. When registering, you will need to choose your current activity level and goal from one of three categories:
    • 30 minutes per day, 3 days a week
    • 30 minutes per day, 5 days a week
    • 45+ minutes per day, 5 days a week
  2. If you sign up with an exercise buddy and record at least three times that you exercised together, you will be eligible for a special cash drawing of $250 at the Final Celebration. Please note: If your buddy also wants to participate in Get Fit & Win. He or she will need to sign-up him or herself online or by calling 795-5990.
  3. Get out and exercise for 8 weeks. You can exercise anytime and anywhere, selecting the type of activity that works best for you. Just make sure to record your exercise on the activity log.
  4. Return the activity log to Healthy Androscoggin and attend the Get Fit & Win summer celebration on July 29th at the Bates College Amphitheater (see details below).

Get Fit & Win Final Celebration

  • The Get Fit & Win Final Celebration is a chance for participants to celebrate their successes getting active. The Celebration is typically held at the Bates Amphitheater, next to Lake Andrews (the puddle) and includes a motivational guest speaker and prize drawings for participants.
  • Prizes Include:
    • $500, $250 and $100 CASH PRIZES!
    • Other great prizes from local businesses
  • Eligibility Requirements for Cash Prizes:
    • Must identify current activity level and goal
    • Must record your physical activity for 8 weeks (log sheet provided) and return completed log to Healthy Androscoggin via email, fax, or regular mail by date on activity log for details.
    • Must live, work or go to school in Androscoggin County and be 18 years of age to win cash prizes (other prizes available for those under 18).

    For all prizes, you must be present to win.

Exercise Ideas

Exercise includes anything that gets the participants moving, including, but not limited to:

  • Walking/Running
  • Hiking
  • Biking
  • Rollerblading
  • Nordic Walking (walking with the use of specialized poles)
  • Canoeing
  • Kayaking
  • Swimming
  • Playing ball with your kids
  • Even mowing the lawn (provided it is a push-mower, not the riding variety)

Here are some example of activities in each Intensity Level:
Low Intensity:

  • Walking slowly
  • golf (powered cart)
  • swimming (slow treading)
  • gardening
  • pruning
  • bicycling (very light effort)
  • dusting or vaccuming
  • conditioning exercise
  • light stretching or warm up

Moderate Intensity:

  • Walking briskly
  • golf (pulling or carrying clubs)
  • swimming (recreational)
  • mowing lawn (power motor)
  • tennis (doubles)
  • bicycling (level terrain or with a few hills)
  • scrubbing floors or washing windows, weight lifting

Vigorous Intensity:

  • Racewalking
  • jogging or running
  • swimming laps
  • mowing lawn (hand mower)
  • tennis (singles)
  • bicycling (more than 10 mph or on steep uphill terrain)
  • moving or pushing furniture
  • circuit training
